5 delicious breakfast ideas to enjoy at home this weekend

Weekday mornings can be hectic—you may be rushing off to work, getting the kids to school or running to an appointment across town. But weekends? Ahh—that’s another story. If you’re able to enjoy a luxuriously slow Saturday or Sunday morning with your family, there’s nothing better. Just be sure to enjoy a delicious breakfast together, too!

Here are five delicious breakfast or brunch ideas for your weekend. Olliffe has everything you need in store and online—we look forward to seeing you in our Yonge Street butcher shop.

Breakfast sandwiches

A breakfast sandwich can be anything you want it to be, but we like to follow a simple formula: bread, cheese, egg, protein (+ extras). This could mean bacon and egg with cheddar cheese on a croissant, thinly-sliced ham with swiss cheese and a fried egg inside an English muffin, a Western sandwich on whole wheat toast with ketchup on the side, or a breakfast wrap with scrambled eggs, grated cheese, avocado, baby spinach and chopped breakfast sausage. (Hot sauce optional!)

Eggs Benedict

We love eggs Benedict with a slice of perfectly cooked peameal bacon between the egg and the English muffin. It’s rich, creamy and savoury, hitting all the right notes for Saturday morning or Sunday brunch. Serve yours with hashbrowns, fruit salad or sautéed greens on the side. Here’s a great recipe—enjoy!

A classic English breakfast

This breakfast takes some time and energy, but we promise it’s worth it. A classic English breakfast (also known as a “full english” or “fry up”) includes bacon, eggs, sausages, baked beans, toast, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and black pudding. A lot of North American versions skip the latter, but that’s up to your family to decide. Here are some cooking tips and tricks from Bon Appetit. This isn’t a quick and easy breakfast, as we said, but it’s ideal for serving a large group and is extra-delicious on a cold winter’s day. Don’t forget some great coffee and tea options—a hot drink is a must!

Ham and cheese quiche

One of our favourite ways to use leftover ham is in a quiche—it’s savoury, flavourful and easy to prepare in advance. Quiche can be served chilled or at room temperature, but it’s delicious warm from the oven. Enjoy a slice with salad or fresh fruit on the side, or make it part of a larger brunch spread with sausages, croissants, muffins, Greek yogurt and other morning favourites. Here’s an excellent recipe to try out—remember, you can personalize this dish by using a different cheese, adding sliced leeks or diced red peppers, or drizzling a bit of sriracha on top.

French toast with bacon

The greatest thing about French toast is that this sweetly satisfying meal comes together in no time, creates minimal dishes and will be devoured by kids and adults alike. If you want to add flavours and textures, serve your French toast with fresh berries, Nutella, maple syrup, whipped cream, strawberry jam, cinnamon sugar and other fun toppings your family can choose from (plus bacon, of course). Not a fan of French toast? Substitute waffles or pancakes instead! Olliffe has some amazing pancake mix from Grainstorm in store and if you’ve got a waffle maker, this recipe is simple but delicious.
