5 warm, satisfying fall meals to add to your dinner rotation

We understand that you may not be ready for this post yet. The first official day of fall is over a week away, and a lot of people don’t want summer to be over. But let’s face it—the days are getting cooler, there’s a chill in the evening air, pumpkin spice is on the menu everywhere you go, and a plate full of your favourite warm, delicious, fall comfort foods sounds pretty fantastic. In conclusion: fall is (essentially) here, so let’s embrace it.

We’re not saying you should retire your BBQ, but September is a great time of year to bring your slow cooker and Dutch oven out of hibernation. If you’re ready to add some cozy meals to your dinner rotation, here are five family-friendly ideas to inspire you. Olliffe has everything you need online or in our Yonge Street butcher shop. We look forward to serving you!

Beef stew

Beef stew is delicious and quite easy to make—as long as you have high quality Ontario beef, fresh produce and a bit of patience, it’s going to be amazing. This recipe is excellent but remember, you can switch things up to reflect your family’s preferences. Throw in some parsnips or turnips, play around with different herbs and spices, use pearl onions or shallots—anything goes! We could eat beef stew every single week but if you’re looking for a twist on this classic, consider making chicken stew, turkey stew or this Italian-inspired pork stew.

Chicken soup

There are a million ways to make chicken soup, but we’re partial to this elegant recipe from Matty Matheson. It’s simple but incredibly delicious, and you can personalize the recipe by adding different vegetables, a cup of cooked rice, white beans for added protein, stellette pasta or egg noodles. It takes a bit of time to make, but trust us, it’s worth it—plus, the leftovers are perfect for lunch the next day. Enjoy!

Chili

Chili is always a good idea. Enjoy it with sourdough toast, a crusty baguette or fresh dinner rolls on the side. You can use the leftovers for lunch or get creative by making chili dogs, chili fries or taco salad. Want to change up this family favourite? Consider using our delectable ground beef and pork blend for incredible flavour, or making a lean yet flavourful turkey chili. No matter which version you make, it’s going to be a hit.

Pork back ribs

What says fall better than a big plate of ribs? Whether you’re watching football or hosting friends and family for dinner, moist, tender, saucy ribs are a crowd-pleaser. We enjoy them with potato salad, coleslaw and roasted corn, but you can also serve our Ontario pork back ribs with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables for an easy autumn meal. Want to try something new? We’ve got delectable lamb side ribs, too.

Beef bourguignon

There’s nothing like a bowl of flavourful, fall-apart tender beef bourguignon on a chilly autumn night. Made with brisket, pearl onions, bacon and carrots, this hearty dish is best served over buttery mashed tomatoes or rice. It’s even better the next day, so consider making a double batch and enjoying those leftovers! Here’s a great recipe to get you started.
